How we rank
Ranked by size, how well known the company is, how recent it is and the source.
Major layoffs shows 8 entries ranked by size (the lowest reported number of roles, on a log scale), how well known the company is (on the S&P/ASX 200 or the Interbrand Best Global Brands list), how recent it is (the weight halves about every 3 days from the newest report) and the source (Official 1.0, Unofficial 0.7), with no extra weight for Australian entries and at least one entry from the last 48 hours when there is one. Only Official and Unofficial entries appear: Reported entries, figures that are only under consideration and archived entries never do.
The four factors
- Size: the lowest reported number of roles, on a log scale, so a much larger cut counts for more but doesn't swamp everything else.
- How well known the company is: companies on the S&P/ASX 200 or the Interbrand Best Global Brands list get a 1.5× weight.
- How recent it is: the weight halves about every 3 days from the newest report.
- The source: Official 1.0, Unofficial 0.7.
Other rules
- There is no extra weight for Australian entries, and the Australia/Global switch doesn't change the section.
- At least one entry from the last 48 hours is included when there is one.
- Only Official and Unofficial entries appear. Reported entries, figures that are only under consideration and archived entries never do.
- The ranking only decides what appears in this section. It says nothing about the companies or the reasons for the cuts.
Every entry, ranked or not, is in the full list. See the methodology for what we include and how entries are labelled.
